About Products

Bobbins;    My bobbins can be broken down into two main categories: All Wood Bobbins and Metal Tipped Bobbins.

All of my bobbins come designed with the weaver in mind. For example, the head and the button are finished to a highly polished, smooth, finish to allow them to slip through the warps, while the shaft is left unpolished in order to help prevent the yarn from spinning around the bobbin during use.

All Wood Bobbins come in three sizes: small, medium and large

Metal Tipped Bobbins come in two sizes: medium and large. These  Bobbins come either as a single species of wood with a metal tip, giving an elegant minimalist design, or as a composite bobbin comprising a number of materials, allowing opportunities for beautiful contrast and detail.

All tips are brass or nickel silver.

At this point I would like to express my gratitude to a highly skilled and talented engineer friend, John Peskett,  who turns all the metal parts in my products. Many thanks for all his skill and patience  ( info@phclondon.net

Hand Tips: This is the head of a large, composite bobbin. Proving very popular it is sometimes held in the hand whilst working and is good for a number of fiddly jobs and for beating.

Sizes are approximately:

Large bobbins: 203mm long x 15.5mm dia.

Medium bobbins: 160mm long x 12mm dia.

Small bobbins: 120mm long x 11mm dia.

Hand tips: 107mm long x 15.5mm dia.

Beater: The standard beater is approximately 205mm long x 45mm wide x 23mm thick. There is a solid piece of brass set in the wood just behind the tines. This and the ergonomic shape gives the beater a head heavy feel to assist beating. There are 7 or 8 tines with centres of 6mm spacing. At the bottom end is a brass ring for hanging the beater, if preferred, when not in use.

Frame Stand: The frame stand is designed to support a tapestry frame at the edge of a worktop. The wooden uprights are clamped to the worktop at the appropriate spacing (the frame width + 12mm). The frame is then held tightly in the aluminium heads by 4 thumb screws. The levers are then tightened when the frame is set at the weavers preferred angle. (Once this is set then pull the levers gently outwards to orientate them so that they are out of the way. Let go and they will `re-engage` themselves ready to be adjusted). There are two widths of spacer that come with the kit. The thin spacers are for a frame that is 20mm thick and the thicker ones will clamp 8mm dia. studding/dowel.  Any thickness in-between can be accommodated.

The wooden uprights are ash and the clamp heads are aluminium.

NB. This set-up needs 2 table clamps with a 8mm diameter top bar. These can be purchased from Artisan bobbins if you don’t have any. They can also be used with a standard `g` or `f` clamp.
